How to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck (Even on a Tight Income)

By Gino DiPierro, 2026-10-11

Living paycheck to paycheck is exhausting. Every surprise bill turns into a crisis. Here's how my clients break the cycle.

Make a budget before the month starts

Write down every dollar coming in, then give every dollar a job: giving, food, housing, transportation, utilities, then everything else. When income minus expenses equals zero, you've got a zero-based budget.

Find the leaks

Subscriptions you forgot about, eating out, convenience fees. Most people find a few hundred dollars the first time they look.

Build a small cushion first

A $1,000 starter emergency fund stops the next flat tire from going on a credit card.

Plan for the bills that aren't monthly

Car registration, holidays, birthdays, insurance. Divide the yearly cost by 12 and set it aside each month.

Get some accountability

The plan is simple. Sticking with it is the hard part. That's where a coach helps.
