How to Get Out of Debt Fast: The Debt Snowball, Step by Step

By Gino DiPierro, 2026-10-12

If you're sick of making payments and getting nowhere, I want you to know something: you can be debt-free, and probably faster than you think. Here's the exact plan I walk my clients through.

Step 1: Stop borrowing

You can't dig out of a hole while you're still digging. No new credit cards, no new car loans, no buy now, pay later. Put the cards away and live on cash or debit.

Step 2: Save a $1,000 starter emergency fund

This is your buffer. When the car breaks down, you pay cash instead of going back into debt.

Step 3: List your debts smallest to largest

Every debt except your house. Ignore interest rates for now. Write down the balance and minimum payment for each.

Step 4: Attack the smallest debt

Pay minimums on everything, then throw every extra dollar at the smallest balance. Sell stuff, pick up extra hours, cut the restaurants for a season.

Step 5: Roll it over

When the smallest debt is gone, take its payment and add it to the next one. The payment grows like a snowball rolling downhill.

Why smallest first?

Personal finance is mostly behavior. Paying off a small debt in weeks gives you a win you can feel, and that motivation is what carries you through the big ones.
