Financial Coach vs. Financial Advisor: Which One Do You Need?

By Gino DiPierro, 2026-10-09

People mix these up all the time, so here's the simple version.

A financial coach

Helps with the everyday behavior side of money: budgeting, paying off debt, building an emergency fund, and getting on the same page as your spouse. Coaching is about habits and accountability.

A financial advisor

Is licensed to give investment advice and manage investments for retirement and long-term wealth.

Which one first?

If you're carrying consumer debt, don't have an emergency fund, or don't know where your money goes each month, start with a coach. Once you're debt-free with a full emergency fund, it's time to invest, and that's when you bring in a licensed investment professional.

I'm a coach. I don't sell investments or give investment advice, so my only job is helping you win with your money.
